About the SHE Companion

With the introduction of the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act in January 1994, companies have been confronted with having to implement a health and safety structure and system in order to create a healthy and safe working environment. The burning question always arises at who decides whether a risk is in fact acceptable or not. Individuals often need to make reasonably practicable decisions however do not always have all the technical and / or legal facts at their disposal for evaluation. This could lead to persons forming their own perceptions regarding health and safety matters because opinions may differ. This may lead to conflict in the decision making process. Decisions on what is safe and without risks to health in a working environment must therefore be rational, reasonable and workable.

With this in mind, the OH&S Act requires that a health and safety management system must be in place at the workplace in order that consultation, inspections, investigations, evaluations, auditing etc. can take place.

In order to develop and maintain an effective and efficient health and safety management system, HAS-CON developed a Safety, Health and Environment Companion as a valuable tool which can assist health and safety risk control managers / practitioners, health and safety representatives, employer representatives, supervisors and employers to develop and maintain a SHE SYSTEM for your workplace.
